Lowell, MA – Construction work on the I-495 Lowell Bridge Bundle will shift northbound traffic into a new lane alignment overnight on Friday, June 25. Assuming favorable weather conditions, the northbound exit ramp at the Woburn Street interchange (Exit 37) will reopen on Saturday, June 26. This ramp will be available to traffic at all times between 5AM and 10PM. After 10PM it will be subject to frequent closures as required for construction activity. Traffic will be shifted out of the high speed lanes and onto the three new bridges on the right-hand de of the highway. The project’s second phase, replacing the second half of the northbound bridges, will commence immediately. Conditions associated with the second phase will remain in place into the early fall of this year.
The MassDOT Highway Division recommends drivers plan ahead and allow extra time for trips through the work zone, especially during the weekend of the 25th-27th.
With the reopening of the northbound exit ramp at Woburn Street, motorists will be able to use all of the Woburn Street ramps for the duration of the next construction phase. Temporary traffic signals put in place at the southbound ramps to accommodate detoured traffic in the previous phase will be shut down.
The night of Saturday June 26th, will also include demolition of the 2nd section of the northbound bridge over Woburn Street. During this overnight operation
Woburn Street beneath the bridge will be closed to protect members of the public.
The work zone beneath the bridge will be configured to allow the speedy passage of emergency vehicles if required. All four ramps at this interchange will remain open during the operation.
The replacement of the six bridges in the I-495 Lowell Bridge Bundle is taking place under the Patrick Administration’s historic Accelerated Bridge Program, an eight year, $3 Billion plan to repair structurally deficient bridges throughout the state.
